Three Unique Ways To Customize A Solid Wooden Fence

Blog

One of the great things about wooden fences is that they come in so many different styles and colors. You can choose a picket fence, a solid one, or a standard post-and-rail. Light stain, dark stain, or painted looks abound. If you want a fence that truly stands out from the crowd, however, you should consider one of these unique customization options.

Cut-out patterns along the top panel.

If you have a solid wood fence, have a top panel constructed from horizontal boards while the rest of the fence is made from vertically placed boards. In this horizontal top section, have unique shapes cut out of the wood. For instance, you could have a series of stars cut from the wood. You could even have the first letter of your last name cut out at regular intervals.

Alternate light and dark panels.

Most people choose fences that are one solid color. But, you don't have to conform to this norm. Consider alternating between lighter and darker stained panels for a solid fence. (You could do the same for a post-and-rail fence, though the look won't be as dramatic.) For the most cohesive look, make sure you choose two colors that have the same underlying tone. For instance, you don't want the darker color to have a red tint, while the lighter color has a yellow tint.

Have a pattern painted on the posts.

If you're choosing a style of wooden fence where the posts are pronounced, why not make them stand out? Have a pattern of your choosing painted or stenciled onto each post. A long, winding stalk of ivy is a good choice if you want a more outdoorsy, rustic look. An artistic, geometric pattern of interlocking circles or squares might work for a more eclectic appeal.

Build planter boxes into the top of the fence.

For a very green, eco-friendly appeal, have planter boxes built right in to the top of the fence. They can stretch the length of the fence, or just occupy a few key spots. You can fill them with soil and grow your favorite flowers or veggies. Alternating crops each year will ensure your fence always has a new and exciting look.

Fence Contractors, Privacy, and You

I've found that one of the perks of being a homeowner is the privacy that your own home provides. However, sometimes there can be a lack of privacy if you are in your yard and it is unfenced. When we bought our home, there was not a fence. One night, after the neighbors dog wandered through our barbecue one time too many, I decided that it was time to look up a fence contractor. We soon found a great price on a fence with a fantastic fence contractor. Now we can keep our privacy while still feeling open towards the neighbors.
